The holodomor

Written by Steve on Friday, March 06, 2009

The universe spins with changes everyday. We study the past earth, the past life and events from history. Though history always remains a mystery, it fascinates me a lot. I’m very much interested in investigating events reported in history. Today, I came across one such article about holodomor which captivated my interest. i couldn’t resist searching more about it and knowing it at the fullest. it was then that I found holodomor-truth.org. This site offers unbiased and true details about this disaster. The term holodomor means the “mass hunger” or the great hunger which affected Soviet Union in the year 1932- 1933. This bad famine affected every fertile piece of agricultural area in Soviet Union. This disaster took away almost 6-8 million lives according to a survey. According to a policy launched then in Soviet Union by Joseph Stalin, the agricultural goods were apprehended for industrialization. This transform made many suffer hunger and starve to death. Holodomor is also called goldonomor to mean the act of genocide. However, the debate is still on to decide weather holodomor qualifies as an act of genocide. Though generations have changed, the horror of holodomor still remains in heart. Want to read more about the incident? Visit holodomor-truth.org for more information.

Salads and raw vegetables

Lettuce, the most basic salad ingredient, varies very much in type; there is the butter lettuce, which has a mild, pleasant flavor, and is ideal on its own with chopped fresh herbs and good vinaigrette. There is iceberg lettuce or crisp lettuce, very tightly packed with hardly any taste but a refreshing crunchiness, and there is my favorite, the cos lettuce, with its long, dark green, crisp leaves, which has the best flavor of all. There are also very decorative lettuces, such as the coral, red and green oak leaves and the mignonette, which make leaf salads so pretty. Rocket, radicchio, sorrel and curly endive all add exciting flavors and visual appeal to salads. Watercress and cress both have a peppery bite which is nice when combined with creamy flavored, rich slices of avocado. Raw mushrooms are wonderful in salads, and absorb flavorful vinaigrette made with extra virgin olive oil.

Lifting with wheels (continued…)

The second pulley is attached to the thing you want to lift. Each part of the rope holds half the weight so you need to pull half as hard. Add more pulleys and you can lift even greater weights. Pulleys are used to lift things that are difficult and heavy. For instance, a set of pulley wheels attached side by side to a rope is called a block and tackle. It may be used to lift an engine out of a car. A car engine is heavy, but with a block and tackle one person can do the job! A crane also uses pulleys to haul heavy objects from boat decks on to a pier or perhaps to move steel girders from one part of a construction site to another.

Lifting with wheels

Imagine that you are a circus strong man. You have to lift at least 1,000 kilos- that’s about the same weight as 15 people. Could you do it? Of course you could, but would need the help of a whole lot of pulleys. A pulley allows us to do more work with less effort. It’s really just a long piece of rope that is wounded around a series of grooved wheels then attached to the heavy object. The pulley wheels allow the direction of the effort to be changed. For instance, if a pulley wheel is hung over a well, the rope attached to the water bucket can be wounded over it and attached to an animal. The animal pulls away from the well, which is easier than pulling upwards. But one pulley does not lessen the effort needed. It takes two or more.
